Moving My Hosting To MediaTemple

I am just about to start the process of moving all my sites over to a new hosting package I purchased from MediaTemple. My current host (A Small Orange) is a complete disaster. I have been with them for a few months now and have had down time constantly! The final straw was when my site went down every day for the past few days for up to 2 hours at a time. How pathetic is that?

The package I went for at MediaTemple is the basic entry level package call Grid Service. The main reason I signed up with the GS (Grid Service) package and not their DV (Dedicated Virtual) package is because I only want to host my blog, a few other blogs and a bunch of smaller websites. I plan on developing a few apps this year and I will host them either on a dedicated server or something like Slicehost. Those apps will get their own custom setups. For now, I just really needed a reliable server for the small websites that I have.

I am looking forward to my time on the MediaTemple cluster. It is a far superior setup to most web hosts available today utilizing a cluster of hundreds of web servers so that your sites never have to share resources of only one server. MediaTemple has a bunch of other cool features that make it stand out as a host and you can read more about them on their website. Even though MediaTemple is a bit more expensive than ABigFail, it is more than worth it. As they say, you get what you pay for!

So, my sites may be down or even break over the next 24 hours as I complete the transfer of files and databases to the new server. I will definitely report back in a few months on how MediaTemple performs as a host.

Matt – if you haven’t moved your sites yet, I would strongly urge you to avoid mediatemple like the plague. The performance of the grid server is pathetic for php / mysql scripts. The only thing it’s good for is static html hosting. I was with them for 2 years and I even have free hosting because I have referred so many people to them. Regardless, free is no good if it’s terrible. Yesterday and today have been disasters for (mt), as you’ll see by searching twitter.

Just thought I’d pass on some advice from my experiences.

    Hey Ben,

Thanks a bunch for the info. Unfortunately I signed up for a year with them. I have had occasional downtime with them but I am hosting relatively small sites. I suppose most shared hosting accounts are terrible. I am getting better uptime with MT than with asmallorange though which is a good thing!

I will be purchasing a dedicated server and slice from slicehost soon which should be more stable than shared hosting :)
