Just Upgraded To Ubuntu 8.10
I have just finished upgrading from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.10 and I am extremely impressed! I skipped the 8.04 upgrade because I only had a cd of 7.10 and didn’t want to use 500mb+ of our 3gig bandwidth cap here at home.
So anyway, I hope to do a full blog post soon on what I love about the new 8.10. But here are just a few things that stand out immediately.
- Hardware just works! – I couldn’t believe that my wireless card worked straight out the bag without having to install ndiswrapper and doing a bunch of config. Same goes for sound, graphics, compiz etc. Overall, the transition from 7.10 to 8.10 was extremely smooth and every piece of hardware in my laptop is working excellently.
- Previous annoyances of 7.10 have disappeared – There were a bunch of small things that really annoyed me about 7.10. An example would be that I could not have a second row of workspaces on my menu panel. It seems as if 8.10 has fixed most of those little annoyances, I will have to use it a bit more to check this though.
There are still a few other things that I will be monitoring over the course of next few days. I want to track my CPU usage and see how heavy ubuntu 8.10 is compared to 7.10 (which seemed to be extremely heavy). I will make a list, keep track and then definitely do an update in the near future.
Ubuntu 8.10 verdict for now: Awesome
